U.S. President Donald Trump granted a “full unconditional pardon” on Tuesday January 21, 2025 to Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the notorious Silk Road dark web marketplace, after more than 11 years in prison.
“I just called the mother of Ross William Ulbricht to let her know that in honor of her and the Libertarian Movement, which supported me so strongly, it was my pleasure to have just signed a full and unconditional pardon of her son, Ross,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
He went on to criticize those involved in Ulbricht’s prosecution, stating, “The scum that worked to convict him were some of the same lunatics who were involved in the modern-day weaponization of government against me. He was given two life sentences, plus 40 years. Ridiculous!”
Silk Road, launched in February 2011, became a major platform on the dark web for the sale of illegal drugs and other illicit goods and services. Authorities estimate the marketplace generated over $200 million in revenue before it was shut down in October 2013, coinciding with Ulbricht’s arrest under the alias “Dread Pirate Roberts.” In 2015, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole after being convicted of money laundering, narcotics trafficking, and computer hacking.
In November 2021, the U.S. Department of Justice (DoJ) announced the seizure of 50,676 Bitcoin linked to a 2012 hack of Silk Road – one of the largest cryptocurrency confiscations in history.
Before his sentencing, Ulbricht wrote to the judge expressing regret, saying Silk Road was not created for financial gain but rather to “give people the freedom to make their own choices.” He admitted his vision was “naive and costly, adding, “I believe at the time that people should have the right to buy and sell whatever they wanted so long as they weren’t hurting anyone else.”
Following the pardon, the Ulbricht family shared a message of gratitude on the “Free Ross” website, thanking Trump for “giving Ross a second chance” and acknowledging the support they received over the years.
