In this blog series we spotlight one of the stories from our cybersecurity newsletter, Beacon.
A coordinated law enforcement operation including six countries has dismantled Archetyp Market, the dark web’s longest-running drug marketplace. The takedown took place between June 11 and June 13 and resulted in the arrest of key individuals, the seizure of millions in arrests, and the permanent closure of the illicit platform.
The multi-agency effort involved authorities from Germany, the Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Sweden, with critical support from Europol, Eurojust, and U.S. law enforcement agencies. More than 300 officers were mobilized to execute raids and digital takedowns across jurisdictions.
Authorities confirmed that the operation led to:
- The arrest of the 30-year old German administrator, detained in Barcelona.
- Law enforcement action against a moderator and six top vendors in Germany and Sweden.
- The dismantling of the platform’s technical infrastructure in the Netherlands.
- The seizure of approximately €7.8 million in cash, cryptocurrency, and other assets.
Before its takedown, Archetyp Market had operated for more than five years, amassing a user base of 600,000 across the globe. It facilitated more than €250 million in illicit transactions and hosted upwards of 17,000 listings, primarily focused on illegal narcotics.
The platform had become a hub for anonymous trade in high-risk substances, alongside other dark web markets such as Silk Road, AlphaBay, and Dream Market.
“With this takedown, law enforcement has taken out one of the dark web’s longest-running drug markets, cutting off a major supply line for some of the world’s most dangerous substances,” said Jean-Philippe Lecouffe, Europol’s deputy executive director of operations.
The operation was the result of years of cross-boarder investigation, with agencies tracking cryptocurrency transactions, conducting forensics analysis, and working through legal channels to expose the individuals operating the market.
Officials have emphasized that international collaboration and technical expertise were crucial to the operation’s success, and that those involved in facilitating or profiting from online drug trafficking should take note.
“By dismantling its infrastructure and arresting its key players, we are sending a clear message: there is no safe haven for those who profit from harm.”
